As these cards from the 1930's show, the traditional BBC policy of issuing acknowledgments but not real verifications--a policy seldom departed from until more recent years--goes back to the days when the BBC overseas service was known as the Empire Broadcasting Station. It began transmitting five daily two-hour transmissions in December 1932. In those days, much of the output was drawn from the BBC domestic services.
