This Week in Radio History - Bombay & Delhi, January 25, 1939

Back in the fateful year 1939, radio was still a developing medium of national and international communication. At the time there was a small number of radio stations on the air in India, mostly giving broadcast coverage to the larger cities. Most of these stations were on the air mediumwave, though there were some shortwave transmitters with a parallel relay from mediumwave.

It was on January 25, 1939, that the first successful two way relay took place between the stations of All India Radio located in Bombay and Delhi. Both stations contributed programming for this special event and both stations broadcast the total programming. These two stations were on the air mediumwave, and also shortwave for regional coverage throughout India.

Thus it is, on January 25, that radio personnel in India are remembering this first historic relay broadcast which took place between two of their major stations in two of their major cities back 62 years ago.
